Baseball Player Killed in Rotterdam

2 reasons why I clicked on this link and thought about posting it. 1) I follow sports closely and 2) Rotterdam was one of the places I wanted to visit some day. In case you don't have time to read the above article, allow me to summarize.

Greg Halman is an outfielder for the Seattle Mariners. This is just further proof that there are more Dutch influences and people around the USA that you would never think. But the story goes; Greg Halman was stabbed to death in Rotterdam early Monday morning. There aren't many details but it seems that Halman's younger brother has been arrested and questioned by police.

Greg Halman was playing baseball and running clinics in his native country during the offseason.

Rotterdam Police spokeswoman Patricia Wessels says police were called to a home in the Dutch port city early Monday morning and found Halman bleeding from a stab wound. The officers attempted unsuccessfully to resuscitate the 24-year-old.

Wessels says the officers arrested Halman's 22-year-old brother. She declined to give his name, in line with Dutch privacy rules. She said the brother was being questioned by police. No charges have been filed.

"He is under arrest and right now he is being questioned," Wessels told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. "It will take some time to figure out what exactly happened."

Not even avid baseball fans know who Halman is but he had as interesting a career path as anyone. Signed by the Mariners in 2004 when he was just 17. He was called up in Sept. 2010, playing in nine games near the end of the season.

Halman was also a member of the Dutch national team that won the 2007 European championship and appeared with the honkballers (AWESOME NAME) in the 2009 World Baseball Championship. His father Eddy was a member of the Dutch national baseball team, as was Jason, the brother being held for questioning in his murder.

Yikes. Seems to me it was something he did involving the city but more of a family dispute. Regardless, if i ever get to visit, I'll watch what I say to my sibling so nothing happens.
