A little Rant and a Contest

As you are no doubt are aware by now, I won't be sticking to my 2 posts a week schedule I set for myself way back when. I hope to do at least 1 a week or, one when I find something really interesting or on my mind that pertains. Today, I have two things to talk about. One I've held back on you guys for selfish reasons.

As you may remember, a majority of my ideas come from an official dutch blog (http://www.transparent.com/dutch) which I have referenced several times. A little over a month ago they had this posted (click). A dream come true! A free trip to Holland riding bikes..... The problem was, I had scheduled through the month of May, 2 weeks of training for my job. So, I showed it to my sister who I would have submitted my video with. Her friend and her put together a steller application video. I would have done a little less self-degradation but it wins votes! (She's going to kick me for taking so long to rally support for her but she's the only one who reads this anyway and the deadline is long since past) Here is her video. They should have won! After the deadline ended and the winners announced I lost interest until I found out they offered a secondary trip prize plus daily prizes. But there was a catch, you have to log on to Facebook to try it.....

Soapbox time. Facebook. Facebook is the bane of young people everywhere. It has only caused my friends and I distress. It wastes time, it dulls your actual conversation skills, it makes people conceited, with the main goal being to see how many friends they can acquire regardless if they know the person well or not, and then there is the constant striving for the maximum 'likes'; sure it gives the super shy a chance to branch out but once they are around that person, they don't know how to communicate without pausing and typing the answer (lol, rofl, ttyl, blah, blah, blah). Granted I see the value in it for people who have moved great distances from their friends. It makes communication easy and you can connect to many. All that aside, I used to have Facebook. I got off a year ago and am glad I did. So, when this came around and I needed to be on it to do the contest I almost balked. So I devised a way to cheat. First I had my sister do it. Second, I used my dad's account which he only used to 'spy' on us. Then, I would log on, submit my answer, then turn it off my account. Now, I've broken down and left it on. BUT, I've turned off the chat box and vow to turn it off when the contest is over (May 29th).

Ok, what contest am I talking about. Well, if you read the other dutch blog post you'll have a general idea. The general idea is, the couple that won submits a video each day you're supposed to watch. Each day there is a question pertaining to the video that you can answer for a chance at winning some free shwag. Most of the questions you can find just by searching Google though. So, if you still have Facebook, check this out. Click. If the link doesn't work just search for the Just Be. In Holland. App.

Why did I say I was being selfish? I was thinking about not telling anyone so my chances of winning the big prize would go up since fewer people would enter! But then I thought how few actually read this. So here you go. Enjoy. Sorry for the Soapbox.

Holland is just a step away

When life gives you lemons make green tea lemonade. So, when one lives in the midwest why not make the best of it and explore the sites in this area? You don't need a lot of money or even a passport. That brings us to Holland, Michigan a Dutch settlement in America. Obviously the city is very proud of its Dutch heritage, as shown in the klompen picture at the top. Klompen is the name of the Dutch wooden clog dance. There are many dutch settlements in Michigan but what makes Holland so distinctly Dutch are its two festivals: the tulip time festival in the spring and the winter festival. The tulip festival is held in mid-May and lasts for 8 days. The festival includes tours at the local windmills, tulip farms, local dutch houses, as well as dances, concerts, street scrubing, and a dutch marketplace. One interesting thing about the Dutch costumes that are presented during the festival is that they are from the 8 out of 12 different provinces of the Netherlands. Here is...

Ohhh the red, white, and blue

If you were given the job of creating a flag to represent your country, how would you design it?  Myself, I would probably think of some symbols of your country then hand over the design portion to an artist, with the plan of choosing colors that aptly represent where you live.  What have most countries of the world done?  Three bars filled in with color.  Lets talk about the Netherlands flag.  This "orange" country has a drab flag, but not only is it drab it's deceiving.  So many countries use red, white, and blue that it is confusing. + A little sun bleaching,  Luxembourg +Sea sickness       France + Dyslexia ,  Russia                                                                             ...

de Vries, Hans de Vries. Almost.

In 1967 THE James Bond (Sean Connery) decided to step away from the world of James Bond films. EOS studios thus had to find a replacement. It came down to 5 men. 2 Brits, an American, a Australian, and a Dutchman. John Richardson, Anthony Rogers, Robert Campbell, George Lazenby, and Hans de Vries. None of those names ring a bell? George Lazenby won the part for the 6th Bond film, On Her Majesty's Secret Service. A movie that has been lauded both as the worst and one of the best Bond films in the franchise. If you haven't seen it, you should. It was the Bond film that 'Breaks the Fourth Wall', Bond gets married, wears a kilt, and goes skiing. But the reason for this post is instead of this; (Yes, THAT is James Bond) We could of had this. Improvement? Probably not. He looks a wee bit angry. Plus, no one watches OHMSS anyway. So, did de Vries have a movie career after Bond? Ha, no. The only notable movie rolls I can find for him were pre bond. And that was ...
